Preservation of Water Resources

Background
The issue of limited water resources is recognized as a global problem along with climate change.
In addition to maintaining and improving the quality of water discharged from business sites into public waters, such as rivers and the sea, Denka recognizes the importance of using water resources efficiently given how essential they are for the continuation of our production activities.
We utilize water resources effectively to generate hydroelectric power.
There is also a connection between water resources and climate change. With certain bases predicted to be affected by drought, heavy rains, floods and other disasters, we believe it is important to carry out risk assessments and prepare for any projected risks.
Examples of concrete efforts
In FY2020 and FY2021, we continued to use water risk mapping (Aqueduct) to assess water-related risks at each site within the Denka Group.
As for each of our domestic plant, we have also commenced a detailed assessment of risk, evaluating the current volumes of water withdrawal, discharge and circulation.
The slight increase in water use in FY2021 is due to the increase in production of carbide and chloroprene rubber, and the fact that the Gosen Site was conducting a trial run (Validation, etc.) of a new influenza vaccine manufacturing building which has about twice the production capacity of the existing facility in parallel with existing manufacturing building.
Regarding the reduction of water use, we plan to continue implementing measures centered on improving the soundness of piping and recovering water.
